Personal Comprehension of Social Media: LJ1

Personal Comprehension of Social Media: LJ1

Throughout the last decade, technology and communications have been simultaneously developing at a substantial rate, hence, the birth of social media and its accompanying technology. When I first got introduced to it, I was skeptical about it because of its security since you have to provide your personal information online and people can see it. However, after listening to friends' reviews, and realizing it's an excellent alternative to face-to-face conversation, I have decided to take a chance and use it. Self-expression has always been an issue because I rarely use words to express myself, and self-expression is basically doing your routine and habits, and people will evaluate you from your behaviors to predict your characteristics and personality. The first social media platform I used was Facebook, and I often focused on myself back then, I would post everything about my daily life, every hilarious post that I found, and everything that I find interesting on my profile page. However, as I grew up, I realized that is just way too childish and awkward to be doing on social media, so now I just use social media to communicate with friends and relatives, rarely posting anything unless it's meaningful and worth sharing for other people, and I adopted a wider variety of social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat. Now if I can go back, I wish I had known how annoyed people are when a person they follow keeps sharing everything about their life, it's not just annoying but eventually, it also creates envy and hatred. I know from experience because I usually get that a lot after following one of my friends, she posts a lot about her travel and experience of different cuisine which made me compare myself to her a lot, but you should only focus on yourself because each person are born differently and it won't be fair if you compare yourself to others, especially through social media.

In terms of behaviors on social media, with an overwhelming number of 4 billion users (Connell 2023), I find it extremely important to manage my dos and don'ts on social media. I would only repost meaningful quotes and funny images from others, and I avoid posting personal information online since it has become easier for people to identity thieves on social media. For example, selfies are popular ways for you to express yourself as well as present yourself, but it is also an easy way for people to impersonate you and deceive others. For online images in general, I mostly prefer the metaphorical image with hidden meanings rather than straight-forward images, and I think there should be more rules regulating the amount of violence that an image can be posted on social media. Also, I think the rules and criteria for posting online should be changed to be more strict, we can always expect everybody's moral compass to be the same, and certain individuals may exploit the system and post inappropriate content on social media. There have been times when I considered quitting social media to focus on more important things in life, but it has become my primary means of communicating in this age of technology and a necessary short-term form of entertainment so I can keep motivating myself to pursue my long-term goals.
