Time Diary

For the time diary assignment, I choose Instagram because it's my favorite social media platform and where I express myself the most. Since the Instagram app on the computer has fewer functions and shortcuts, I only used Instagram on mobile, plus the convenience of using it when you can lie down comfortably as well. I never actually spend too much time on a social media platform unless the content posted is really attractive or there's a live stream of my favorite content creators, so my usage is usually short 5 - 10 minutes sessions of checking out friends' stories and celebrity news on the platform. And each session happens every hour and a half or when I get bored I will just constantly check on Instagram for entertainment. Besides the small checking sessions, I also usually chat with my friend on the platform and most conversations start with a story reply or when we share funny content with each other. On average, I would say that I spend around 20 minutes per hour checking out the latest content and communicating with my friends. I have carefully recorded my usage of Instagram over the course of 4 days from 02/17 - 02/20 for the time diary assignment.

The first day was 02/17 which was Friday, as soon as I woke up in the morning I instantly grab my phone and went online to check out what I have missed during my sleep, and then I went to class and do my routine hourly check, but on that day, there was a class that was extremely boring and the material wasn't too hard so I just got bored and shamelessly spent the entire time of the class to watch funny content on Instagram. And then after my last class ended, I went home and chat with a really close friend about the soccer match that I missed last night because I went to bed early for about 1 hour, after that, I barely went online anymore because I have to finish my assignments and just instantly went to bed because of tiredness. The second day was Saturday so I woke up late in the afternoon, and after I had my lunch I instantly went online to check on my friends' stories because they mostly post stories of their trips with family on the weekends, a friend of mine had a trip to my favorite art museum which is Denver Art Museum in Colorado so I reply to her story and we talked for about 20 minutes of how beautiful it is and how many art pieces are there. Besides the conversation with a friend about the art museum, I also had a group video call with my group in the evening to watch a horror movie, and we also had a discussion after the movie so I spend most of the night on Instagram. On the third day, I only did routine checks in the morning and in the afternoon because I went outside with my friends, but in the late evening, suddenly my favorite stop motion artist went live to introduce her latest art piece and also to show the process of creating the art that I extremely fond of so I ended up spending another night to watch the artist's live stream on Instagram. On the last day which was Monday, I had class all day and it was midterm week so I barely even had time to do my routine checks, and after the class ended, I had to do assignments as well as prepare materials for the midterm exam of courses so I just instantly went to bed after from exhaustion. 

In general, after the record, I did notice that I mostly use it in the evening when I had the freest time and since I only use Instagram on my phone because of the extra functions and convenience. I did notice a habit of checking social media first when I opened my phone almost every time during the past four days, the schedule of the semester definitely affects my usage of social media, because I rarely have time to go online when I have to focus on doing the assignment and I get so exhausted after that, so the diary was a valuable lesson and I learned much about my routine just by recording the process every day

This week's reading mentioned social media laws and ethics, which everyone can easily relate to based on the popularity of social media platforms in the past decade, and as the number of users increases, the rules and regulations are also tightened with the intention of creating safer online environments. After reading this week's material about social media usage in professional settings, I realized that there are multiple forms and formats that social media can be employed in the workplace, but the general goal is to build relationship networks and share information. It can be a great way to get to know your colleagues, which will create a positive working environment that can help increase everyone's work productivity. Another beneficial aspect of social media at work is the ability to share information almost immediately, usually, it would often take a few business days for a department to contact another department and respond, but with social media, it can be done in a couple of minutes. After carefully interpreting this module's reading, I have realized how great of impact pictures can have on our perception, especially for social media users. Words have always been considered the primary form of communication and have contributed to one of the most popular communication channels (verbal). However, non-verbal communication forms that are tended to be expressed through images, and pictures are able to provide us with more reliable information and engage us more than just solely words. Therefore, pictures and images have always been used to convey emotions or thoughts that words failed to on social media platforms, but images and pictures posted on those sites aren't always genuine. They can be adjusted, modified, or even stolen from other sources with the current development of technology, even if an original image is authentic but if you decide to change it using photoshop tools to make it better, it would still be considered a fake image to me.
